The Vietnam War left a big impact on both American and the Vietnamese. The war left 2 million Vietnamese civilians dead, 1.1 million North Vietnamese troops dead, 200,000 South Vietnamese troops dead, 58,000 American troops dead. The mass bombings left Vietnam in ruins. When the United States used poison, it ruined the environment and caused widespread illness. The new unified Vietnam was called Socialist Republic of Vietnam. In the U.S. the public lost trust in the government from all the secrets that they kept. (SparkNotes Editors. “SparkNote on The Vietnam War (1945–1975).” SparkNotes.com. SparkNotes LLC. 2005. Web. 17 Apr. 2016) The American veterans struggled with physical and emotional problems. They also struggled with drug addictions because when they were out there fighting they had to take something to help them do what they had to. Some veterans blamed the anti war protesters for turning everyone else against them. Most people weren't rude to the soldiers just uncomfortable. (Group, Gale Vietnam War Reference Library 2001) The people who were rude however would call the soldiers baby killers and would spit on them. Listen to how my grandpa described it.
